What kind of industrial endoscope products should the foundry industry choose?

In the foundry industry, industrial endoscopes are like equipping quality inspection personnel with a pair of "X-ray eyes", enabling them to clearly observe possible internal defects such as shrinkage porosity, sand inclusion, and gas holes without damaging the castings. They are key tools for improving product quality and ensuring production safety. When faced with a wide variety of products in the market, making the right choice is of vital importance.

Clarify the requirements and lock in the core parameters

The first step in choosing an industrial endoscope is to clarify your own inspection tasks and requirements. You need to be clear about the main types of castings to be inspected, what common defects are, how frequently they are inspected, and most importantly, the precision requirements. For instance, if it is a rough inspection task that involves spot checks and has a high tolerance for defect sizes, entry-level equipment might be sufficient. However, if it is a key component like an engine block and precise defect quantification is required, then a high-resolution video endoscope with measurement functions is essential.

Based on the task type, the following core parameters can be focused on:

Probe diameter and length: The probe diameter must be smaller than the minimum hole diameter of the casting to be inspected. The 4mm and 6mm probes are commonly used in the foundry industry. The length of the probe should be able to reach the deepest detection point. For conventional castings, 1 to 10 meters is usually sufficient, and there is no need to blindly pursue an excessively long length.

Imaging quality: Whether the imaging is clear and whether the color reproduction is true directly affects the judgment of defects. For scenarios where it is necessary to detect minor defects or preserve evidence, it is recommended to choose a video endoscope with a resolution of no less than 1 million pixels.

Guiding capability and viewing Angle: If the detection path is curved, a model with a probe that can swing its head must be selected. Meanwhile, depending on the different viewing angles, it is equipped with lenses of various perspectives such as direct view (0°) and side view (90°), which can effectively reduce blind spots.

Protection and durability: The environment in the foundry workshop is harsh. Endoscopes need to have excellent high-temperature resistance, oil resistance, water resistance (IP67 grade or above is recommended), wear resistance and corrosion resistance.

Choose the type of endoscope based on local conditions

At present, there are mainly three types of mainstream industrial endoscopes, each with distinct features and suitable for different scenarios:

Video endoscope: This is currently the best and most mainstream choice in terms of overall performance. It forms images through a front-end micro camera, which is clear and feature-rich. It usually supports taking photos, recording videos and even 3D measurements. Its probe is flexible, easy to operate and can adapt to complex cavity structures. For the vast majority of casting inspection requirements, especially scenarios that need recording, measurement and detailed inspection, video endoscopes are the preferred choice.

Fiber optic endoscope: Its core advantage lies in the fact that the probe can be made extremely thin (the thinest can reach 0.4mm), and it has strong heat resistance and anti-electromagnetic interference capabilities. It is highly suitable for rough inspection tasks where the detection channels are extremely narrow or the environment is harsh (such as residual heat in freshly demolded castings), and only visual confirmation is required without the need for recording. The drawback is that the images are conducted by optical fiber bundles, and the clarity is usually not as good as that of video endoscopes.

Straight rod endoscope: It offers extremely high clarity, but the insertion rod is hard and cannot be bent. Therefore, it is only applicable to castings with a detection path of straight deep holes or blind holes, and the application scenarios are relatively limited.

Focus on functionality and sustainability

After determining the type, some additional functions and long-term cost factors are also worth considering:

Measurement and recording function: If the inspection task involves quantitative requirements for defect size (such as determining whether a pore is within the allowable range), then a video endoscope with three-dimensional measurement function is almost indispensable. Meanwhile, the functions of taking photos, recording videos and generating reports are also crucial for quality traceability and file management.

Modular design and centralized management: The modular design that allows for independent replacement of probes and hosts can significantly reduce long-term usage costs. For instance, when the probe sheath worth only a few thousand yuan wears out, it only needs to be replaced with another sheath instead of scrapping the entire machine. For large workshops, setting up centralized inspection stations or establishing equipment rotation mechanisms can effectively enhance equipment utilization and unify inspection standards.

Selection suggestions based on the scenario

For small and medium-sized gray cast iron castings with high defect tolerance (such as manhole covers and pump casings), cost-effective fiber optic endoscopes can be given priority for rough inspection tasks such as checking whether the sampling channels are unobstructed.

For key castings with complex structures and high quality requirements (such as engine blocks and turbine blades), high-performance video endoscopes are recommended. The key points are the flexibility of the probe, its small diameter (such as 3mm) to penetrate complex cavities, its high resolution (above 1080P) to capture fine cracks, and its three-dimensional measurement function to precisely quantify defects.

The production mode of multiple varieties and small batches: Choosing a video endoscope system that supports the interchangeability of probes of various diameters, with one main unit adapted to multiple probes, is a more cost-effective solution to meet the inspection requirements of different products.

Attach importance to the selection of manufacturers and standardized operation and maintenance

Choosing the right equipment is just the first step. The technical support from the manufacturer is as important as the standardized daily operation

Examine the manufacturer's qualifications and reputation: Choose a manufacturer that has ISO quality management system certification and whose products have relevant protection level certifications (such as IP68). At the same time, it is also crucial to understand the manufacturer's reputation in the industry and the response speed of after-sales service.

Strengthen personnel training and equipment maintenance: Formulate standard operation instructions to standardize operations such as probe insertion, advancement, and cleaning, which can effectively prevent human-induced damage. At the same time, establishing a maintenance system of daily cleaning, monthly testing and regular calibration can keep the equipment in the best condition and extend its service life.

When choosing industrial endoscopes for the foundry industry, the key lies in "matching" - precisely aligning the capabilities of the equipment with your actual needs and budget. It is hoped that the above analysis can provide you with a clear selection idea. If you could share more specific inspection objects (such as casting types, common defects) and budget ranges, perhaps I could offer more targeted suggestions.
